• Kazan (Russian: Каза́нь; Tatar Cyrillic: Казан, Latin: Qazan) is the capital and largest city of the  Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

• It is a major industrial, commercial and cultural center and remains the most important cultural  center of the Tatar culture.

• With a population of 1,143,535, it is the eighth most populous city in Russia. Kazan lies at the  confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in European Russia.

• Kazan is located 793 Km east of Moscow. Kazan is a place where the East meets West.

• The origin of name Kazan is unclear. The literal translation of the word Qazan is «Boiler or  Cauldron» .

• It is believed that the city of Kazan is named after this object and its geographical similarity with  «Qazan-pan» ; namely the city is situated in U-shaped low land.

• Major monuments in the Kremlin are the 5-domed 6-columned Annunciation Cathedral (1561-62)  and the mysterious leaning Soyembika Tower, named after the last queen of Kazan and regarded as  the city’s most conspicuous landmark. Other structures of interest are: the towers and walls erected  in the 16th and 17th centuries but later reconstructed; the Qol-Sharif mosque, which is already  rebuilt inside the citadel; remains of the Saviour Monastery with the Spasskaya Tower; and  the Governor’s House (1843-53, now the Palace of the President of Tatarstan.

• Kazan is a significant educational and cultural center of Russia.Kazan has traditionally been a  university city and only Moscow and Saint Petersburg have more students. With 44 institutes of  higher education, around 25 colleges including colleges for special training , 178 schools and over  50 schools for learning music,

Kazan is the host city for 2015 World Aquatics  Championships, 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

• Kazan is a city of Peace and Calm. The people of Kazan are noted for their affability, hospitality  and religious tolerance.

  • Faculty of General Medicin
  • Historically the first and the largest faculty of KSMU, for many years it remained the only Faculty of Kazan Imperial University.
  • The Faculty was established in May 1814.
  • Duration of study: 6 years.
  • The first two years students study preclinical subjects.
  • Beginning from the third year students start studying Introduction to internal diseases, general surgery, pathological anatomy and pathological physiology.
  • The 4th, 5th and 6th years of study are devoted to mastering clinical disciplines: surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and other disciplines.
  • Upon completion, faculty graduates receive the qualification of a “Medical Doctor” specialty in “General Medicine
  • Clinical investigations
  • The basic branches of the departments of pediatric faculty are the investigations of the age peculiarities of pathology and normal state of child.
  • They work out the problems of adaptive possibilities of children, immunological reactivity in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, diagnosis and endotoxicosis treatment in childhood and micro ecology of child.
  • The departments of therapy perform scientific research work in the fields of prophylactics and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
  • The priority trends are the investigations of the pathogenesis membrane mechanisms of hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infraction and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Surgical departments are the leaders of Russian medicine in the field of laser surgery and endosurgery.
  • Regional center of cardiovascular surgery is formed in one of the departments of the university.
  • The faculty of prophylactic medicine deals with the problems of ecology, environmental pollution in oil-fields.
  • They created the program of training doctor-ecologist for all medical institutions of Russia.
  • The dental school of the university is well-known for developing new constructions of dentures, implants, orthopedic materials with forms ‘memory.’
  • Clinical training is performed at 54 units of the Ministry of Public Health of Russian Federation.
  • There are 33 general hospitals, outpatients departments, 21 policlinics, maternity houses, dental polyclinics, etc.
  • The total number of beds is 8600. There are 4315 therapeutic, 2120 - pediatric, 1210 - surgical and 440 - gynecological beds.
  • Clinical Units:
  • Clinical training of the medical pediatric and dental faculties students is provided in 54 medical institutions.
  • There are hospitals, maternity houses, special diagnostic centers, out-patients units and 20 polyclinics including dental and children’s.
  • Clinical units have 8600 beds.
  • University dental polyclinic has 98 dental chairs.
  • Republican and 8 city centers of sanitation and epidemiological control with the specialized departments and laboratories are used for teaching the students of prophylactic medicine faculty.
  • Pharmaceutical faculty uses for training its students 65 pharmacies with the laboratories in State, 18 pharmacies in Chyvachia and some commercial pharmaceutical units.

•  Russia has been a destination for foreign students from the times of the Soviet Union (USSR).

• Since then, KSMU was one of the medical schools from which foreign students were graduating in  ample amounts.

•  Currently, 450 students from 46 countries are studying in KSMU. More than 500 our foreign  medical graduates and 200 Post graduates and Fellows currently success fully working all over the  world, which explain the popularity of KSMU among foreigners.

Medium Of Study:

• Medium is in English medium only.

• The university had commenced English-medium courses in 2003. All the lectures, practicals,  laboratory studies, seminars, tests, examinations, state examinations for English medium are  conducted in English language.

• For the English medium students, along with other subjects, Russian Language will also be taught  as an independent subject for 4 years, in order to communicate with patients as well as the locals.


• There are 2 Semesters in the academic year:

•  Autumn Semester — From September to January ,

• Spring Semester — From February to June.


• There are examinations at the end of both semesters. The dates of examinations (Session Period)  are determined by the Rector, but the examination dates for individual disciplines within the session  period are decided by students and faculty members by mutual agreement.

• Student’s performance during the Examinations is Graded as: «Satisfactory»; «Good»;  «Excellent» or «Unsatisfactory».

• In order to appear for the exam, a Student must have passed all the Credit-Tests, and must have  fulfilled the 100 % attendance


• All students have their vacations twice a year.

• Summer vacations: from July 1 to August 31.

• Winter vacations: from January 15 to February 7.


• International students may live in the students’ dorm or have an apartment or a room arranged  for them by the University.

• Each hostel is equipped with the all modern facilities, with heaters,eight rooms on each floor, one  kitchen, two toilets, shower in the basement.

• Off-campus apartments Rent amounts depends on the location, size and condition of the  apartment.

• As a rule, apartments offered for rent are supplied with furniture and basic household appliances  (refrigerator, TV, telephone).

• Current average prices start at RUR 12,000 for one-room apartments and 15,000 for two-room  apartments.

• Utility bills are not included in the rent.

• Paying gest/Family stay. The best choice in terms of improving language proficiency is staying  with a host family.

• University has its own mess system, where Indian food is available, veg and non veg meals  available to choose for the students.

• Hostels has the facility to cook by them self

• International students may live in the students’ dorm or have an apartment or a room arranged  for them by the University.

• But the living conditions are rather Spartan: two or three persons to a room, eight rooms on each  floor, one kitchen, two toilets, shower in the basement.

• Students cannot select their rooms.

• The number of rooms is limited, and, therefore, early applications will be given priority. In  addition, some students may be uncomfortable with the rather strict dormitory rules.

  1. Tuition fees will not change during the whole duration of education. Tuition fees for foreign students in KSMU are as follows:

2. Hostel Fees is currently 300 USD per year. Hostel fee typically increases by 5-7% per year according to the current prices for electricity, gas, water, heating, etc.
